Four arrests made in connection with mass shooting that left 6 dead in Mississippi, FBI says
The FBI has announced the arrest of four individuals in connection with a mass shooting that resulted in six fatalities and over a dozen injuries in a small Mississippi town. Three individuals, Teviyon L. Powell, William Bryant, and Morgan Lattimore, have been charged with capital murder, while Latoya A. Powell has been charged with attempted murder. The shooting, which occurred during a high school homecoming celebration in Leland, was sparked by a disagreement among several individuals, according to the FBI. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not disclosed a specific motive. The FBI had earlier sought the public's help in identifying four people of interest, releasing surveillance photos and an FBI poster.
This tragic incident marks the 14th mass killing in 2025, according to the AP/USA TODAY/Northeastern University Mass Killing Database. The database tracks all homicides in the U.S. since 2006 where four or more people were killed intentionally within a 24-hour period. The shooting in Leland was the deadliest of several shootings across Mississippi over the weekend, including incidents at two Mississippi universities during their homecoming celebrations.
In a separate incident, the bodies of two people, including a pregnant woman, were found on a high school campus in Heidelberg, Mississippi, on Friday night. An 18-year-old man was arrested and charged with murder and illegal gun possession. The shooting in Heidelberg occurred during the homecoming football game at Heidelberg High School.
Additionally, three people were found with apparent gunshot wounds near a campus building at Alcorn State University in Claiborne County on Saturday evening. One victim died, and no arrests were announced. The shooting happened after a homecoming game, with over 7,000 spectators in attendance.
